The system offers optical and Electromagnetic (EM) tracking capabilities, to precisely locate the tumor which leads to raising recovery rate to more than 90%.
Since 57357 is keen on leadership and continuous improvement aiming to offer latest diagnosis and treatment methods to our children, it purchased the latest neurosurgical navigation system “neuronavigation with tractography, Stealth S8”, funded by the Egyptian Cancer Network, ECN USA.
According to Dr. Mohammed Albeltagy, head of neurosurgery department of Hospital 57357, the system is intended as an aid for precisely locating anatomical structures in either open or percutaneous procedures. It has Interfaces with intraoperative imaging systems, to orient surgeons with extent of tumor removal.
Dr. Albeltagy revealed that, before this equipment we used to depend on experience, brain anatomy study and MRI to track the tumor, which pushed us in some complicated cases to leave a big part of the tumor to avoid sensitive spots of the brain. Through this method we improved the rate of total tumor removal to 75%. The StealthStation S8 system introduces the most advanced version of Stealth technology, a combination of hardware, software, tracking algorithms, image data merging and specialized instruments to help guide the surgeon during surgical procedures. It offers better visualization with easier manipulation of 2-D and 3-D views and intuitive layering and blending tools. It tracks surgical instruments in real time, based on preoperative and intraoperative images. Hence the equipment helps avoiding complications in cases where the tumor interferes with functions centers, accordingly provides patients with more protection, and raises recovery rate for this type of tumor to 90% to 95%.
Dr. Albeltagy explained that the ratio of these dangerous tumors (brain tumors that touch function centers) is between 25% and 30% of children’s brain tumors. Most of these tumors are benign and the only treatment is surgery without using chemo or radio therapy. Removing the tumor completely or a big part of it lead to increasing recovery rate, this is why this equipment is important for neurosurgeries.
