CCHE 57357’s department of pharmaceutical services obtained the accreditation of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) for its quality services.  The accreditation confirms the hospital’s leading role within the field of clinical pharmacy in Egypt.  Previously the ASHP organization accredited the hospital’s residency training program back in 2019. The new accreditation designates CCHE57357 as the first pediatric oncology charity hospital in the world to receive such a prestigious accreditation.

The American Association of Health System Pharmacists is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides professional support to government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Joint Committee for the Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (JCAHO) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM). 

“The ASHP surveyors were amazed by 57357’s integration of a specialized pharmacist in servicing various areas within the Hospital   “, says,  Dr Sherif Kamal, Director of the pharmaceutical services department at CCHE57357, highlighting the improved usages of medicines and enhancement of patient safety.   

CCHE 57357 is playing a leading role in the  clinical pharmacy field in Egypt, and has been credited with introducing this specialty to many hospitals of the Ministry of Health and universities inside and outside Egypt through the dissemination of its experience and training of medical personnel, which falls within the framework of Egypt’s vision for 2030 to develop and improve the healthcare system. 

It is noteworthy that the 57357’s  department of clinical pharmacy is undergoing continuous development, to ensure that the work flow is meeting world standards for medication preparation.  Furthermore, the department has witnessed significant development, expansion and provision of new equipment, which have contributed to increasing accuracy and speed of performance and reducing congestion while ensuring the awareness of the patient and his family about recommendations and effects of the use of the drug. Also, the department underwent a complete transformation and facility upgrading,  redesigning the places dedicated to the preparation of pharmaceutical doses in a safe and accurate manner  in accordance with international standards to ensure air quality and efficient workflow.

A continuous follow up on clinical pharmacy performance and compliance with accreditation standards by ASHP is ensured through regular annual visits.

“We promised contributing to research projects & more outpatient clinics including endocrinology by the next ASHP visit three years  from now”, disclosed Dr Kamal as to  future plans after gaining this accreditation.  It is noteworthy that just as ECN U.S. had supported the first ASHP accreditation, it also did for the second one, bearing in mind that the gaining of the Joint Commission International accreditation for the entire Hospital performance in 2016 paved the way towards the ASHP accreditation.     ​
